I am afraid I am disappointed with Qimage for RAW processing now compared to Canon's DPP software. The sharpness I am getting using Canon's software comparing some photos I took this morning with the 5D MArk III and the 400mm 5.6 L lens is so much better with Canon's software. It's like it was shot with two different cameras or a different lens. I hadn't noticed this much of a difference with the 5D Mark II or the 7D. Now I'll have to compare it to the results I have been getting with Canon's software with my 5D Mark III files, which has been very good. I have the Canon software and tried it with my more modest (but very good) 600D. The lens correction is ok if it's covered in the database but with a reasonable lens, it's not often correction is needed. You'll find with Qimage Ultimate it is much quicker to get an excellent result from a raw image - the raw refine interface is so easy to use and copy setting to multiple images. If you need any extra tweaks, the image editor is available with the amazing TTS. Terry

Great 4th of July present! Now I'll have to compare it to the results I have been getting with Canon's software with my 5D Mark III files, which has been very good. I like the lens tuning in the Canon software that they just added for some of their lenses.

Thanks. That makes life easier when printing. My work flow has changed over the last 15 years going from film scans, then to digital cameras, and then to improving cameras, photoshop plug-ins, and of course Qimage improvements.

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Sharpening question

If you do pre-output sharpening in Photoshop and then select the default output sharpening in Qimage does Qimage factor in a different or size appropriate amount of sharpening if you do a 8x10 print and then do a 24 x 30 print and leave the sharpening slider in Qimage at the default of 5? In other words, if you liked the amount of sharpening Qimage does with the slider at the default(5), will a comparable amount of sharpening be done for a 24 x 30 print of the same image of do you need to increase the amount of Qimage sharpening the larger you go in print size to get a comparable amount of sharpening.

Thanks for the replies. I'll just have to be patient, like with previous cameras I purchased when they were just released. Which includes being patient for the custom Kirk tripod plate for it as well.

Fred,
Yes, it did just come out last week. I was just wondering if Mike knew if it would be weeks or months. Canon released it with a version of DPP that has a bug in it so you can only process Raw files in high speed mode with less adjustment capability. I have read that if you don't use high speed mode the Tiff output files look lousy. For such an expensive camera it's a shame that Canon didn't have all the bugs out of their software. I also am not used to using DPP because it is tedious to use and Qimage does a better job in most cases.

I am finding I am doing more things right in Qimage for some types of photos becasue the Raw conversion color is so good. Years ago I used that tool but forgot about it.
