61  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / "Crunchy" preview on: May 31, 2012, 08:11:38 PM
Been away awhile  Grin

Wondering why SOME of my image thumnails and some of my soft proof images look really bad? Some, not all look very rough but print out just fine. By rough I mean crunchy, low resolution, looks like someone rubbed sand on them type of image.  Huh?

If it makes you feel any better, I've had it happen to me.

I was able to get this to work by first creating a line in flash pipe to copy, then the second line was the develop line. Is this the way it should be done?

Thanks.

But my problem still exists.  Attached is the setting screen, from my understanding it should:

Copy images from J
Put the raw images on the desktop/test in a folder named RAW
Develop images in put in a folder called desktop/raw/developed/YYYY-MM-DD

Why won't this work? If I select the operation "copy" the photos will be copied. If I select the operation "develop" nothing is copied and developed.
66  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / QU workflow suggestions- My take on: August 01, 2010, 04:53:37 PM
Many people such as me need to work on hundreds of photos from a shoot. Because of this I am having a hard time working out a good work flow. Here are some of my initial thoughts on how I would like to use QU. My goal here is to try and use the raw processing capabilities of QU in a work flow that works for me.  Here are some of my initial thoughts as I sit down here at my desk and try to work this out.

•   Import function
o    Why import photos that you don't need? How about the ability to see the photos and select/deselect the photos I want to import? (Not a deal breaker, I can always delete them once imported).
o    Import operation to develop then send to a folder as a .tiff.

•   Rating pictures
o    I want to rate my photos during the first pass to start to filter down the images to the ones I want to work on.
o   Thumbnails are too small. I need to view a larger image in order to weed them out.
o   Need to be able to use the arrow keys to flip through the images.
o   Need to be able to use the key pad to rate the images (1-5)

•   Refine raw image
o   (Wait, my camera does not have a custom profile available. Need to purchase a color target, send to Mike??
o    Make necessary adjustments if needed.

•   Sending to external.
o   This is a must for the kind of photography I do.
o   How about the option to right click on a thumbnail that has already been raw refined then the ability to send to an external editor as a .tiff or other file format? I know there is the option to send to external editor, but I don’t want to send the raw file and I don’t want to go through the extra steps to double click on the raw, save as, create a new folder then save open the external editor select the folder and open.

•   External editor
o   Next steps would to work on the images in my external editor.
o   Most likely, when finished I would save to a folder in the existing structure I imported to via QU and save it as adjusted, filtered or something similar.

•   Printing
o   I have Qimage Studio so this should not be an issue. I would navigate to the filtered folder and print from there.
67  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Sending to external editor (CS5) on: July 29, 2010, 04:44:43 AM
Anyone know how to keep Adobe Bridge from opening when I select external editor in QU? Bridge is not picking up the QU adjustments. All I want is to have CS5 open up the image that I send to it from QU...

Okay I figured out that it is because I am sending it a raw file. So, if I convert it to .tff it can open directly in CS5. So the question is, do I need to convert all my raw images to .tiff before I can adjust in CS5? If so, how should I do it and keep the ability to use QU to process raw files?

I love using Nik plugin's I have all of them :-)  I hope to work out a flow that will allow me to use QU and photoshop (w/nik) that can compete with my current Lightroom/photoshop work flow.

I resisted the temptation to buy an I phone. I currently use  blackberry on AT&T. (Reception with AT&T sucks). While the blackberry is a wonderful phone and it integrates very well with my enterprise requirements, people expect more from a phone these days such as the ability to use a web browser  and navigation tools which is not very good on a blackberry. And my eyes are getting older and I can't see the screen :-(  I just put in my order to change to Verzion and an Android. I got the HTC Incredible but may exchange if for a DroidX if I don't like the HTC. Although the HTC has a smaller form factor which may sway my decision.

I really hate Itunes. I use Media Monkey to transfer my music to my ipod and never open itunes. The only reason I have an ipod is because it integrates nicely into my car's navigation system :-D. I do however us a macbook pro. I have a choice at work between a thinkpad and a macbook pro. The macbook powers up and down quickly and in general runs faster and never locks up compared to the think pad.

Add Apple to that list. iTunes automatically applied an upgrade to my iPhone 3G. Not it runs slower than anything. It's almost unusable. Now I have to decide whether to upgrade to the new Apple hardware, or go with a different brand and possibly a different carrier.

Lightening it up a bit here, my vote is go Android!  We have four iPhones in our household and two have failed with hardware issues, each in about a year and a half.  Apple's solution: we'll be glad to sell you a new one at $500 (not even mentioning that you can get one for $200 if you renew your AT&T contract).  That plus the fact that Apple came out with a defective iPhone 4 that, even if it worked, is still only a marginal improvement, added to my severe dislike for iTunes, led me to get an Evo 4G on Sprint.  I wanted to explore the possibility of writing apps for Android anyway so it was a no brainer for me.  What I didn't expect was how much I'd like that phone!  I was a bit worried about Sprint coverage because I'm in a "fringe" area until I found out that Sprint and Verizon share cell towers.  Sure enough, I get better service with Sprint than I ever did with the AT&T and the iPhone: I can use the phone in the doctors office (quietly on 3G) Smiley because I actually have a signal and I can use it inside stores like Best Buy where the iPhone has zero signal.  But that's just the reception side.  I am ecstatic about how much better the Evo 4G is than our iPhones in general!  The screen is finally big enough to see while the phone is only marginally bigger (no wasted screen real estate like the iPhone).  I can just click and drag my MP3 files from my Windows media center folders right to the phone, and I can even play all the MP3's from Windows Media Center through wifi in the house, which means while around the house, I have access to my entire library of MP3's that I access via all the computers and my Xbox 360.  Want a ringtone?  Just drag an MP3 or a WAV file right to the ringtones folder.  On the iPhone, you have to convert it to some Apple format, try to get iTunes to accept it into it's "library", connect the phone, sync it, then it won't let you sync without either wanting to delete apps or sync those too.  Can't just sync ringtones alone.  And you'd better not have plans that day if iTunes decides it wants to back up your phone and you make the mistake of letting it do that!

Anyway, I find the Evo a brave new world without limitations.  I now realize how restrictive the iPhone really is and I'm really enjoying all I can do on Android.  If you want to look at some good Android phones, there's the Evo 4G on Sprint or the Droid X on Verizon right now.  They're both great.  I prefer Sprint due to the lower prices and I also lean toward the Evo 4G just because I like the interface and the "soft" buttons on the front rather than the "push" buttons on the Droid X.  I'm paying about $20/mo less for the exact same service as I was getting on the iPhone... minus the poor reception.  Wink  Oh, and when you get a firmware update on an Android phone, you get a message on your phone that the firmware is ready to install.  You click on the phone, and 5 minutes later you are done.  No computer needed.  Beats spending half a day trying to update the iPhone through iTunes!  One final observation: all of our iPhones (we have 2G, 3G, and 3GS... not buying into the iPhone 4) would continually get into a state where 3G data would stop working.  They'd generally work for maybe a day but then when you go to use the browser and you have full 3G bars, it just hangs.  Rebooting the phone always fixed the problem.  I think it's a bug that Apple never acknowledged.  Same thing happens with push notifications.  They work for a few hours and then just stop.  Have to cold boot the phone to get them working again.  I never have problems like that on the Evo.  Never have to "reboot" it and the 3G just always works.  In fact, AT&T claims they have the fastest 3G network but I don't see it.  The Evo is faster on 3G than my iPhones ever were.  The iPhones seem to "stutter" on 3G.  Load a little, wait, load a little, wait.  The Evo is just smooth and seems to load faster.  And that's when both phones are getting a full 3G signal.

My 1 cent...

70  Mike's Software / Qimage Studio Edition (archived) / Raw processing questions on: September 10, 2009, 04:42:23 AM
1.   Resetting raw adjustments – Once I have right clicked on a thumbnail and selected Refine Raw Exposure, my understanding is that the raw image is processed using my cameras profile. How do I reset that adjustment? Not talking about the right click and reset adjustment function. Additionally, if I don’t select Refine Raw Exposure but simply drag to the print queue, I notice that the camera profile is added to the print queue path name, does that mean the camera profile was used? If so, was the exposure set?

2.   Pre processed files by another program – If I opened a raw file in Lightroom, and later opened the file in Qimage studio, will it now be double processed?

3.   If I send a picture from Qimage to CS4, AdobeBridge automaticallly opens. Does that mean that Bridge is using camera raw and assigning its own profile to the raw file?
71  Mike's Software / FlashPipe / Flash Pipe Feature Requests on: September 08, 2009, 03:41:16 AM
Mike,

Thanks again for the program. Looking good.  Is there a good place to request new features or will this thread suffice?

1 - Ability to start another program at the completion of the file transfer. Should be able to pick which program to start from a list. Example, when finished start adobe bridge, or qimage, etc... (Work flow enhancement)
2 - Option to shut the program down when transfers are complete (Convenience)
72  Mike's Software / FlashPipe / Converting from "Industry Standard" on: September 07, 2009, 06:04:39 PM
Hi Mike.

I have enjoyed using Qimage for a few years. Not that I am an expert but I do get pretty good results if I don't say myself :-)  I have been a LR user since version one, but with today's purchase of two profiles (Olympus E-1 and E-3) and FlashPipe I am hoping to start a transition to a DDIsoftware work flow with final editing in CS3. It's going to take a while to figure everything out so look for some pretty basic questions in the next few weeks :-)

I am pretty happy with LR. It has a nice user interface and a nice, at least for me way of managing my photographs. So I don't make the switch without hesitation.

I am making this switch primarily for three reasons:

a) Qimage really does a nice job. Not only in printing, but maybe as important for me it has made the complex task of printing easier by providing the tools necessary to easily set up print jobs. You see I really don't want to spend the time figuring out in detail how to print multiple images on one sheet, or to worry that I don't have a setting correct. I am able to set my printer profile, drag my images onto the printing area, set my sharpness and go. That means a lot.

b) You're attention to customer service and quick resolution to problems cannot be underestimated.

c) I believe in supporting "the little guy".

I now start my transition from LR to Qimage. I don't have any idea how to set up my work flow. I will need to Learn how to use FlashPipe and how to convert Raw in Qimage Studio. Hopefully I will find a post that shows a nice flow from FP to Qimage to CS3 and back.

One more thing.... Please support the Olympus E-p1 as soon as you can. You see, since I purchased it over a month ago, my Olympus E-3 and E-1 haven't seen the light of day...

Best Regards,

Ned
73  Technical Discussions / Computer Hardware / Re: Mac Pro on: September 07, 2009, 03:55:58 PM
Fusion is our company standard for people who use Macs. As an employee we can select from A Thinkpad or Mac Pro. If you choose a Mac, then the company image will have Fusion and XP installed. Glad to see Qimage is supported under emulation. This was the only thing that was keeping me from switching over to the Mac for home use. Well that and the cost of the Mac I want :-D

I have had both Parallels and VMWare's Fusion. In my experience, Fusion is far better with far fewer issues, never had MS BSOD since Fusion install, and have avoided the Boot Camp side of life. Qimage works fine with Fusion as well, as that is the point of this thread... and, FWIW, you have to purchase either one and have a copy of MS Windoze as well. Sad
