331  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Can we find a way to tack down the size drop down? on: August 08, 2010, 08:26:59 PM
I love the way the size drop down works now - really helps when putting different sizes on the same sheet.  But one annoying thing, while I can drag it to any point on the screen, as soon as I click a thumb, the drop down pops back and covers most of the page image.  This is mainly a problem when doing drag and drop free hand placement.  I would like to have the drop down stay wherever I drag it until I move it elsewhere.  Gripe gripe gripe with an occasional whine.  Wink
332  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Strange (but fairly benign) Thumb Behavior on: August 06, 2010, 12:55:55 AM
Well, I know I'm always reporting issues here that turn out to be my own mental short circuits - and perhaps this is another one.  In some folders, there will be one or two thumbs that remain constantly in a state of "Loading . . ."  If I open the same folder in Studio, the thumb shows fine.  Even in QU, nothing hangs or anything and in fact QU will load the image into the Queue and if I change or create a filter then the thumb will show (come to think of it - this seems to only happen to pictures that don't yet have a filter - but certainly even not to most of them.)  This one is certainly not a big issue, and like most things that happen to me, probably isn't happening to anyone else - but it is rather curious.

Shor nuff - there it was.  Mike - if you really wanted to get rich - you could make that screen say anything you want - like "By clicking Yes, user agrees to send Mike Chaney $(name a dollar amount). "  I would already be in the poor house, or maybe divorce court. All I can say is  - Doh!

Mike -

Thanks - I thought it would be something braindead like that.  Don't remember seeing that question  when I installed the demo, I probably just blindly clicked Yes or Next to everything without thinking.  But I don't think it came up when I installed 103 yesterday - maybe because it wasn't an initial installation.  I'll try when I get home tonight - might I need to uninstall first to make sure I get that question about the application data location?

Mike -

When you can, please address the issue I raised elsewhere as it is keeping me from using QU.  How can I get QU to use the application data location that I have been using for Studio?  When I installed QU, it started using C:\Documents and Settings, which is where my data used to be until I  moved it over a year ago to my D drive, so QU doesn't see any of my albums or sessions from the past year or more.  Can I just tell QU to migrate to that location?  I don't want it to overwrite the stuff that Studio has put there in the past year.

Thanks

336  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / QU not finding albums on: August 04, 2010, 12:10:07 AM
In Studio, I have moved all of my application data to a spot on the D drive.  QU is looking in the old location on the C drive in documents and settings.  Is there a simple way to tell QU the correct location?  To add on a bit more - I am afraid  that if I tell QU to migrate to the new location - the one I have been using for Studio for the past year or so - that it will overwrite everything that's there.  I was hoping maybe a simple change to an ini file somewhere could do the trick - but that doesn't look like it's true.
337  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Some questions about about raw and thumbs on: July 31, 2010, 03:55:36 AM
Well of course - that's what I know I will really be buying - so even if QU and Studio had the exact same functionality right now, I would still buy QU.  I look back at what I first bought when I purchased Qimage 7 or 8 years ago, and all the functionality that Mike has added since - for free.  Can't wait to see what's coming here.

Thanks Fred - as usual, you are pretty much on point, and in fact additional storage is one  of the items on my agenda.  But one other question - other than the speed with the cached raw, do I have additional functionality with QU that I dont' have with Studio? I(I'm purchasing QU anyway - but just want to fully understand this)
339  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Some questions about about raw and thumbs on: July 30, 2010, 05:04:39 PM
I know that I have seen both of these addressed, but now can't find them.  When I launched QU the first time, it asked me a question about rebuilding thumbs - was this all thumbs or just the raw thumbs? How much additional space will be needed? Secondly, where can I find a concise summary of what QU does with raw files that Studio does not do, and what this means in terms of time and storage space.  Thanks much.
340  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Some grumbling going on over here... on: July 26, 2010, 05:36:02 PM
I will spend more this year on light magenta cartridges for my Epson 2200 than what I will spend to buy Qimage Ultimate. I appreciate the respectful way in whcih Marc has tried to make a business case for what he is saying (rather than a rant), but guess I will repeat what I have said in other forums about Qimage.

Functionally, Qimage is one of three equal pillars in my serious photographic avocation.  Those pillars are: 1 - Camera, lenses, flash, lighting - total investment about $4500, 2 - Computer, printer(s), peripherals - total investment about $3500, 3 - Qimage - Total Investment - less than $200 - even after I buy Ultimate.  Enough said about that.  And my annual expenses for all of the above - for paper and ink - the maintenace fee for Qimage Ultimate wont even be noticed.  I guess I think that this profile may be typical of many Qimage users, so don't understand the complaining.

(Full disclosure - I don't know MIke but have spent my life as a software develoment professional - albeit in a totally different domain than this - and certainly understand the realities of what Mike is facing.)

Unbelievable.  I have actually been wondering how Mike and Qimage have survived financially this long. So for me this is good news. If spending $90 plus a nominal annual fee assures me continued attention to improving and supporting Qimage, it's still a bargain.  And Mike hasn't abandoned anybody. If you have one of the other Qimages, you can still keep it forever and never pay him another cent. I will dork around with the demo for a few days and then buy Qimage ultimate.  And where else can you get the kind of support with individual attention to questions, fixes, and feature requests.  - Mel W.  Columbia Md.

I don't think I would call it upsizing, but I know that a number of people look at my portraits - and remark that they look lifelike - as if they could touch the person.  Since I am certainly not that talented as a photographer, I credit Qimage, its interpolations, and smart-sharpening.  I really don't think there's a better bargain.  I have said this before in another forum,  there are 3 equal partners in making my pictures, 1) my photographic equipment, 2)my computer and printing equipment, and 3)Qimage.

Thhe first of these equal partners is about $3000 investment, the second a bit more than half that, and you all know how much the third costs.
345  Mike's Software / Qimage Studio Edition (archived) / Situation is Resolved on: May 04, 2010, 06:33:07 PM
Thank you Fred, Terry, Ray, and Mike for the advice and hints from my two earlier problem posts.  It took me a while to go back a few weeks and reconstruct the sequence of stupidity that caused this problem. But as near as I can figure out I did some combination of the folllowing things.  First, I imported a very large number of new photos (about 400) and put them into a single folder - which I don't normally do.  Then I followed my normal workflow and created a basic filter (autoexposure and minimum sharpening) just to let me preview all of the photos. So - I said "apply filter to all photos in the queue" - and right after I said ok - I SHUT DOWN QIMAGE to go work on something else for a while.  Obviously, I shut Qimage before it had updated all of the thumbs and it was my next Qimage sessin where I had the first hint of problems - with thumbs refusing to show and Qimage hanging.  Then to make matters worse, I used explorer to move some image (and the corresponding flt files) to other folders. If that wasn't bad enough, I then opened Qimage to one of these folders to preview some photos, and while still open, I edited in PSE (something else I seldom do).  Along the way, I did a few other things that didn't help either - not worth going into it all.  Anyway, everything is now stable again; I deleted and replaced some folders, rebuilt thumbs all over the place
