Mike's points highlighting compatibility mode and running the install as admin are really important.

A few more thoughts:  I just checked, compatibility mode offers two for Win XP, SP 2 & 3.  Try both.  And I'm foolhardy enough that if neither worked, I'd try Windows 8.1 (8.0 might work, but I doubt it; last resort).

On that MS page, another suggestion is to clear the print spooler.  More often than not, and unless you have something important pending, a good step before the next attempt to install the Epson driver.  I think QU might have a button for that, I haven't really looked into it yet.  I've used the following instructions for a few years; it does require use of either a command prompt or running PowerShell, as an admin.  Here's the condensed, basic instructions.  Once opened, type in the following lines, pressing Enter after each line.

   net stop spooler

   DEL /F /S /Q %systemroot%\System32\spool\PRINTERS\*

   net start spooler

One last consideration:  routine uninstalling in Windows is not always totally effective.  About a year ago, when I uninstalled the Canon XPS driver to go all in on the standard Canon driver, I used an uninstaller program.  I've used a couple over the years, Hi-Bit Uninstaller is my current favorite.  It's available as a portable app; if you're not familiar or comfortable with those, just run the installer version.  I think the portable version is only available direct from Hi-Bit, the installer is downloadable from MajorGeeks.com.  This cleans out lots of other leftover stuff from an installation that might cause issues with a re-install.  There's a short video tutorial at MG.  Something simpler, but just as effective, is Geek Uninstaller, completely portable, also at MG.

And it might be a good idea to make sure you have a really current System Restore point, not just a recent one from the Windows schedule.

Once again, good luck.

Butting in here, but thought I'd throw this into the mix.  Especially as an easier alternative to buying an old XP system.

As a firm believer in using legacy programs and devices, or at least being prepared to do so, I had to see what I could find on this.  I am not a techie; I just don't like being told I can't do something.  So, YMMV, and proceed at your own risk.  But in your situation, this is what I would do.

To see if there was a 32-bit driver for the Epson Stylus Pro 10000, I did a search for that term plus the word driver.  The results page gave me this link as the first result:

https://epson.com/Support/Printers/Professional-Imaging-Printers/Epson-Stylus-Pro-Series/Epson-Stylus-Pro-10000---Archival-Ink/s/SPT_C362111ARC

On that page you're given the option to select an OS, with Windows XP 32-bit being the closest option to what I think you're looking for.

A while back, I found a web page on Microsoft that answers some questions about using older programs, devices, etc. on Windows 10.  I just checked, that page is still up, so I'd guess that MS doesn't actually object to it.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/how-to-install-devices-software-from-older-windows/c19bee9c-431f-46e2-85f1-6ab90304d278

Note the part about "Compatibility Mode".  Especially since this driver is an .exe, which may cause Microsoft's hair to catch on fire.

VirusTotal reports the driver file is clean.

Good luck.

In the future, when my current printer driver gets corrupted again, what’s the best way to get this backup driver activated?  Use the “Add Printer” option in Windows and then point to the folder where the .cab file is stored?

I'm not sure Win 10 lets you do that anymore with printers, possibly a few other peripherals.

For me I'd go with the following with the .cab file (and similar compressed files):  unzip the contents to a temp directory then right click on the .inf file and select install.  I'm not positive, but I think it overwrites the existing driver installation; but it's still possible you might have to remove the first printer.  It's been a while since I've had to do that.  Also, it's possible you may need to be logged in as Admin.

You can also go to Settings -> Devices -> Printers & Scanners, click on your printer, then Manage -> Hardware properties.  That will open a small dialogue box for that printer.  Click on the Settings tab (not the change settings button), then click on the button labelled "Devices and Printers Folder"; that opens another new window, that shows all you printers (including PDF printers, etc), as well as fax devices.  In that window click on "Printer properties"; in that new windows, click on the advanced tab, click on "New Driver"; that should open the driver installation "wizard".   At one point you'll have to select the "Have Disk" option; you don't want to go to the Windows Store or you get the new and improved and updated driver.  Point to the directory (folder) where you unpacked the .cab file and you should be good to go.  There's probably a shortcut to this, but I think recent versions of Win 10 make it hard to find.  My opinion, others experience may vary.

Which is why I just right-click on the install option for the .inf file.

Fortunately, my Canon printer drivers install via an .exe so that's not an issue.

MS keeps adding, removing and changing the ways things get done.  Some variation of the above procedure should work as long as your printer does, but with MS, who knows?
19  Technical Discussions / Printers / Re: How to locate, save, and re-install a driver for the HP Z3200ps printer? on: December 09, 2020, 07:30:10 AM
A site called “Microsoft®Update Catalog” by MS claimed to have that driver also, but I got an error message when I tried to download it.

Thanks,
Kelly

I'm a fan of obtaining legacy drivers, etc., and keeping them as backups, and this didn't sound right, you should have been able to download what MS thinks is the driver you want.  I went directly to the website https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx.

In the search box on that page I just typed "hp 61.121.362.41" no quotes, nothing else, and saw a listing for that driver.  It looks like that version was primarily for pre-Win 10 oses, so I couldn't tell which one you wanted.  Anyway, I clicked on the top-most 44-in listing and was able to download it no problem, opened up the .cab file, and it looks normal to me -- for some undefined value of normal.  Grin

If you tried to go through the MS Store, that might have cause a problem because MS wants you to use the current version.  So you might try going to the link above and see what that does.

Good luck.

The time stamp on your reply says 3:18a.m.  And you were coherent anyway!  Impressive.

Thanks again.
21  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Canon PRO-100 Unclog Job Color Settings on: December 04, 2020, 03:22:59 AM
Okay, I confess, it's been a while since I printed on the PRO-100.  It was this year, but that's all I'll say!   Grin

I decided to run a purge sheet as my first print, just-in-case.  It's been even longer since I've run an Unclog Job.  When I saw the dialogue box, I got so confused, I couldn't even find the "rear" paper tray (doncha hate that when it happens?).  The attached screen shot shows the colors in the QU dialogue and the Canon ink levels/details windows.  I left all the colors checked, ran the job, all seems well, i.e. no smoke came out of the printer, the test page looked fine.

So for a complete Unclog Job, what colors do I check for the PRO-100?
22  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: INK COST MATTERS on: November 18, 2020, 09:45:36 PM
INK Cost Matters

So what do you think, am I nuts?

Fred

I'm not sure what one has to do with the other.  I'm pretty your sanity has nothing to do with your ink consumption.  For one thing, living in the Pacific Northwest, we believe that anyone who goes through the weather where you live has to have their sanity scrutinized.  But you still know what you're doing when it comes to printing, and using QU, and providing lucid explanations, which is why no one is petitioning to have any of you locked up.   Grin

Back to the subject at hand.  My income isn't fixed, it's downright broken.  But the cost of ink doesn't bother me.  I don't do anywhere near the volume that most (?) owners of the Pro100 do, but I don't hesitate to make full size proof prints for something important to me.

I actually waste more money on paper.  I'll read someone's rave about such-and-such a paper, and often will try it out.  Generally, my minimum paper size is 11x14, usually 11x17, (never borderless), and I'll make a couple of prints that I really like.  But then another image or two sucks, and my infatuation may fade with that paper.  So I have several mostly full boxes of paper idling on the shelves.

I haven't run a lot of unclog jobs, and when I do, there isn't any issue.  I use a couple of UV lights to check for issues, and still haven't had any that I can see.  I've had it for 3.5 years now.  Anyway, unclogs aren't adding to my ink costs.

I'm pretty sure it was you, Fred, who said that this is a hobby, and ink and paper costs should be of little concern.  I'd probably add, generally speaking.

Bottom line:  I think you can rest easy that ink costs are not indicating that you're nuts.

Stay safe and dry and warm, and hold on to whatever sanity you have left.

Can you give us any tips using ClipCache Pro  eg do you just pile the clips in one big list.   I am trying to decide if ClipCache is better than NoteTabLite   (Free) https://www.notetab.com/notetab-light which can be nominated to record all copy commands.

Jeff

ClipCache Pro (CC) is a clipboard history program for Windows.  (Oops, I called it a bookmark manager, but that's not it's strong point.)  I have used it for editing simple text notes, then pasting into other applications (for example, this reply is being composed in it).  But it is not a text editor like Notetab  As seen in the screenshot, it has a tree hierarchy, and Qimage has it's own folder.  If needed, I could add additional folders and/or sub-folders.  It's a random information database, kinda-sorta.

Copied texts go into the primary folder, then get moved as needed, or else edited then pasted elsewhere.  I also use Treepad Plus for some items, especially if I want to add some formatting like bold, italics, different font, whatever; anyway, clips might be posted there.  (I am starting to move some back into CC however, just for convenience.)

I started out years ago (late 1990s) with a similar program called Keynote.  Before that (1988) the first desktop PC program I added was Tornado Notes, which later became InfoSelect.  Needless to say, I've collected and saved an enormous amount of random data and notes.  I think I currently have just over 3100 clips in total; the QU folder only has about 80 clips at the moment, many others moved/pasted elsewhere (incl. moved into the Printing and/or Post Processing folders).

CC lets me copy snippets from almost anywhere, and decide later what to do with it.  Including ignorning or deleting.  My settings are for plain text OEM captures, but there are other formats, just not to my liking (some may remember the RTF dll wars of the 90's and 00's.

But the single most important feature for me is the capture of the source URL for the capture clip.  By right clicking on a particular clip, I can choose to open open my browser (again, see the screenshot).

There are other similar, and excellent, programs for Windows, some freeware, and I've tried many over the years, but I don't remember any of them having easy access to opening the source URL along with the other featuees I like.

And FWIW, I'm just a loyal ClipCache Pro user, I have no other affiliation with the product.

Adding my voice to those who read often/write seldom.  I copy relevant/interesting passages/threads and store them in a bookmark manager (ClipCache Pro, used it for 10+ years); a folder just for Qimage.  (There are probably dozens of tips, tricks, notes of items I'll probably never use, but I browse them occasionally, just in case.)

I was also going to point out the number of views posts such as this one has, but that count is somewhat inflated as I'm sure I'm not the only one who has viewed it at least 3 times.

So, thank you Fred, Mike, Terry, and others who contribute.  It is much appreciated.

OK, sounds good, but can one of you fine spell checkers tell me what is a Think black border?
See your quote.

No problem, Fred.  It's not a real mat, it only "thinks" it's a mat.  The borders, in contrast, are real borders.

Maybe I should have written "think thick matte black mat"?

I "think" I should stop.  I need more coffee.  And black ink.
26  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Job Save with Matte, erm, Mat on: May 05, 2020, 05:07:28 AM
May I ask a dumb question! What exactly is a black matte border. I don't understand what is meant here.

Well, first off, that darn spell checker didn't correct "matte" to "mat".  What can I say.  If it was a real mat, using actual mat board, I would usually use a black matte mat.

If the above didn't clear up the confusion generated by my spell checker:  The mat border is an option in the QU image editor (right-click on the image, select "Photo Mats (uneven borders)" to bring up the mat editor.  It's a faux, printed representation of a proper mat.

In the attached example, I have a think black border, a thinner white border, and a thicker black border, which was produced using the "Photo Mats..." option.  Multiple mats (or mattes, depending on your spell checker) can be added.  Some day I may test the limits on the number of mats that can be added.  Just not in the near future.

Mike:  thanks for correcting the naming of images when printing to file!
27  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Pattern printing on: April 29, 2020, 02:32:38 AM
(Hopefully Mike won't see this post!  Wink )  If I'm reading you right, you want to tweak your image before you run an actual print.  There's a way to do something like this in QU, but it's not very user-friendly for users such as myself.  (I'd say it's somewhat klunky, but I won't, just in case you-know-who sees this.)

As I posted in a different thread over on DPR, I usually print on RR Polar Luster Metallic, but sometimes it's not the best paper, or I don't have the size I want/need (no 13x19 metallic at this time); using the "Edit Image" function in QU, I can change brightness, contrast, tones, colors, etc, to suit the paper, and save those as separate settings for that image, or to use with other images when changing to that paper.  Most of my prints hang in my home, but move from location to location (room to room, hallway to room, whatever), and I'll want to change how the print presents.  And occasionally I need to get the print to be a closer match to my monitor (17-in HP notebook).  (Just to be clear:  I run a print on the different paper, if it isn't right, I'll tweak the printing parameters before running another print, and generally get it right on that next run.  And then save that edit as a Job.)

The only reason I have issues with this procedure is that I only work on that 17-in monitor (I change location, including sometimes working out on the deck).  And while the notebook is generally fast enough for most of my needs, the image editor preview window is a little small and more than a little slow, especially when toggling the effect change between before and after.  Folks with regular/normal computer setups probably won't run into this.  But I will admit, if I'm not in a hurry, I do use it and it works find.

I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but you might spend some time playing around with it so that you're familiar and comfortable using it; for me it took some getting used to.  It might be a useful tool on occasion.

If none of the above is what you were talking about, then just ignore all of this!

All my other programs allow this option Affinity , On1, lightroom, ACDsee allow this option in the driver options- for some reason it does not appear in qimage

Steve

PSP is a plug-in, and as far as I can tell doesn't install as a stand-alone .exe, which is why it would work in Adobe products, as well as the others mentioned (although getting tech support for non-Adobe programs might be difficult).  QU doesn't support plug-ins, and going out on a limb here, probably won't for some time to come, if ever.

You can also hold the Alt key and just click and drag the thumbnail and drop it onto the image in the Live View while holding the Alt key: it's not mandatory to use the queue tab.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike, I prefer that to dragging to the queue tab.

As noted in my edit above, I will sometimes print these to file.  With the matte included, the filename becomes Template(####), and "Auto naming (preserves image file names)" is being bypasssed/ignored.  Is there a setting I can tweak somewhere?  (I did look, honest!).

[ANOTHER EDIT]  Re: use of Alt + drag, this allows replacing the image with a different one, even if dragging to the queue (which would require the extra step of opening the queue tab).
