I know when I first started I really struggled with color management. I don't know if the following helps or not.

1st lets talk about the monitor. To properly profile you can use something like Profile Prism which is a software solution or else use some kind of device (like a Color Munki, or some other).. This will put your monitor in a known state and proper brightness for the environment you process your pictures in. The better the profile (which you should do on a timely basis) the closer the colors on the screen will match your printer output.

2nd - Your paper profile - These can either be supplied by the paper manufacturer or you can make your own with a device like the Color Munki. These profiles are the icc profiles that match the amount of ink laid down, platen gaps, etc.

3rd - Your print driver - This comes with your printer. When you ask your printing program to print (Qimage, Photoshop, Gimp, NX2, Elements, etc) it will call the driver. You then tell the driver what page size, paper type (glossy, matte, canvas, etc). There should be a selection for the printer, photoshop, or NO Color Management. If you are using color profiles for the paper you should check NO Color Management.

So...

Edit picture (if for the web use srgb, if you are going to print use adobe rgb1998).

When you call your printer (either from photoshop or qimage) you tell the print driver the paper type, size, No Color Mgmt.

In your print software (qimage) you pick your paper profile (generally supplied by the paper mfg or made by you with a Color Munki or some other device.

Now when you print your picture should match the picture on the screen.

Hang in there. It eventually came to me. There is a lot of help here and elsewhere.

I have the same option in my Canon ipf6300. Really works slick. I just make a custom size like 24x60. Add various prints and check the save paper check box. Really works nice.

I think that by saving and recalling job settings you could have some various page sizes, 17x12 - 17x18 -17x24 etc, and just recall them. I believe it then give you the option of resetting the driver automatically. So all you have to do is recall that job, pick the sizes of the pictures you want to print and the printer will cut at 12-18-or 24 and so on. I use the ipf6300 and I never know how many prints I want on the roll so I just make the custom size in the print driver each time. Doesn't seem to take too long and I can check my paper types, etc.

I recently printed on Frederix Canvas 777 and wasn't sure which paper type to use. After some digging and asking at Frederix I used the Canvas Matt II. It worked very nicely. The paper mfg. will generally help you out. Good luck. Qimage is a fabulous print program, especially with that nice printer you have. You can really save on paper, do multiple sizes on different page sizes. Save job and layout settings. You don't have to resize any files or worry about print sharpening. Once you work with it for a little bit, ask questions here, you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

I have an ipf6300. On your driver page #2 under Color Mode..Select no color correction. You are double profiling. Under the color mode drop down you have 3 choices..Color, Monochrome, No color correction. That should help alot...

21  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Blue name on file? on: September 27, 2010, 02:05:38 PM
I now this is basic but I went to a folder of pictures and one of them had its name written in blue. The others were in black. I thought this meant it had a filter........Wait a minute.... I just checked and I had tried to process it in raw. When I removed all the raw processing it went back to black ink. So I guess it's blue for raw and red for filter..This really is a neat program.

24  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Does Ultimate automatically apply camera profiles? on: September 11, 2010, 10:25:19 AM
Does Ultimate apply the camera profiles that downloaded into Application Data/DDI/Qimage/Profiles? I use a Nikon D200 and the profile shows up in that folder, but how do I tell if it is applied when I do raw processing? Is there some indication?

Thanks,

Mike
25  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Do I like Ultimate? on: September 05, 2010, 05:23:27 PM
Just a few reasons this is the best software for the buck I have ever seen.

This weekend my granddaughter asked me to take her graduation pictures. Not something I really like to do because I do mostly landscapes and various things my wife likes to paint. Anyway, I had 130 pictures that I culled, used some negative exsposure, converted to jpg. Set my page size to 24x24, picked 2x3 picture size, selected all and hit prints. Great proof sheet for them to decide from 71 pictures. Took hardly any time.

My wife wanted an 18x34 canvas print of a waterfall. Took more time to change the roll paper than to resize and position.

I can change paper, profiles, sizes and do some editing in Qimage...all for 90 bucks. If I get stuck this forum is all the help I need.

I don't use all the features, but the ones I do save me tons of time, paper, and anger. I use Capture NX2 with Nik filters and do all my printing in Qimage. I also use Qimage for the resizing, to save paper, to do quick edits on the entire picture, add text, make cards, use some templates, add copyright, and more.

The updates are quick and painless. No uninstalling, fiddling with settings, interference with other programs, small footprint.

Thanks Mike, Fred, Terry, and everyone else that contributes here.

As I said  - BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK..

I don't believe the 8300 will do 3mm margins, that is only available on the 6xxx models. I don't think you can do borderless on sheet feed just roll paper. The 8300 is not as versatile in handling sheet feed. You may want to look at the Canon Wiki. They have a lot of information on the Canon printers and the driver setups.

27  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Sharpening settings and some random thoughts on: August 19, 2010, 03:00:15 PM
Terry, Fred, et al,

When you are using tts what are your starting values for the radius and strength. I have usually used High Pass in Capture NX2 to make the picture look good at about 70% of full size (1:1). Then I would let Qimage take care of the print sharpening at default settings. I really like the way the prints turn out. I think tts is really neat I'm just not sure how to go about using it in my work flow.

Which is:

Import pics into View NX and cull bad ones. View NX reads my camera setting and does the raw conversion. I can change WB, brightness, contrast, crop, straigten in this.

If anything like filters, curves, fancy stuff is needed I open raw in NX2. I generally do the High Pass to sharpen to taste.
Save as tiff or jpg

Print in Qimage using its sharpening and page layout and interpolation to handle resizing.

I have tried Qimage raw and it works ok some of the time but in NX2 I can do selective curves, any lighting settings, D-lighting, HSL settings and much more on only selective parts of the picture without having to mess with layer masks and layers. I can also save in different versions which is nice.

I'm not trying to sell NX2 and I think Qimage is probably (no - for sure) the best value piece of software I own. You really want to show your stuff in the print and nothing I have seen does that better than Qimage.

Sorry for going on. I don't like long posts usually but, I am trying to incorporate Qimage more into my workflow. I am not real fond of sidecar files because I do move my stuff around some and like to keep everything together.

Thanks for all the sharing of ideas you guys do. That is another real reason for staying with Qimage as much as possible.

Sincerely,

Mike

This might be an obvious question, but can you apply the tts more than once? In other words on a building on the left side and a park bench on the right, possibly in two different edit steps?

29  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Multiple layouts on a large page size? on: August 11, 2010, 09:02:50 PM
You guys are the best. Really appreciate your patience. I think I've got it figured. I am going to get a roll of matte paper of a decent weight. I've created a page with about 12 templates with text (was able to duplicate the text on each template - nice feature). I will drop a series of 4x5 photos on each template and move them around in the full page editor. . I think if I save this as a job I can then just replace the pictures if need be or recall the tempates with text and add new pictures. It's a little fussy but should work well. Another thought was to use 17x22 double sided paper if I want to put text on the inside. If I'm somewhat careful I should be able to flip the page and run it thru the sheet feed for the second side. Worth a try.

Thanks again.

30  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Multiple layouts on a large page size? on: August 11, 2010, 06:18:40 PM
Terry - This is just a simple fold card. I think it would be too difficult to align the second side with the text for the inside of the card. I was thinking of just making a simple text files and the either glueing or tacking it on the inside.

Fred - I am assuming the way you did that example was to put the large red template down on the page several times and then fill with the smaller pictures. Terry mentions a place holder template. Do you save the layout or job and then just insert smaller pictures on the text layout? On the attached picture do I just drag the smaller picture up to one of the red squares with the text in it? Then save all of them as a layout or job? Sorry to be so slow but I think we are getting close...

Thanks for all the attention from both of you

Mike
