Thanks!   I think this will get me started.

(I don't use any Adobe products anymore either except an old pre-subscription version of Acrobat 10 "Pro", and I only have the copy on my windows 7 OS left of that one! Smiley

I found this tool, which is fortunately independent of Adobe products:
https://fineartprinting.com.sg/image-analyser/

Seems to work ok for my purposes.

I don't use any Adobe products but I know Photoshop will show you the "size" of an image so LR probably will too.  You can just set the size to, for example, 10 inches wide and it'll calculate the PPI for you.  Just be careful not to resample: just change the size and not the pixels because you don't want PS or LR resampling the image.

It's a simple calculation so you can also just take the number of pixels and divide by the size you want.  For example, if you have a 3600 x 2400 image and you want to print it at 10x8 inches, you'd have to crop the image a bit to make a 10x8 so 3600/10 is 360 PPI and 2400/8 is 300 PPI.  Since it's cropped you take the lower of the two numbers and you know your 10x8 will be 300 PPI.

Mike

Mike,

Do you know of any freeware tool (like a javascript tool or something) that one of the photographers I print for could run to get a PPI evaluation of his/her file before they send it to me?   Something where they could input the dimensions I give them, and the tool responds with PPI.

I looked and couldn't find anything.   The photographers use either Lightroom or Photoshop (mostly Lightroom), and I wonder if there's something in those tools.   I'll ask my expert users about that.   But wanted to check with you.

JPEG's are fine for the final output.  If you are a purist you could output TIFF so everything is lossless or even 16 bit TIFF if you want the absolute best gradations in your prints but I don't think the difference would be noticeable on 99.9% of shots.

The main thing to note when exporting to Qimage is to leave the image resolution original (don't resample or change pixel size/dimensions).  Let Qimage do all the resampling because you want to do that at print time when you know the size of the print(s) you want to make.  When exporting, Adobe RGB color space is fine as well.  The only time you would need a huge color space like ProPhoto RGB would be when you have seriously saturated colors that test the gamut of your printer/inks and you use 16 bit (per channel) TIFFs as above.

Regards,
Mike

Still in the trial stage for QImage Ultimate, but leaning heavily on committing.

As one may know, in Windows, darktable has no print option.  My few test prints with exported jpg's have been great.  But does anyone have any advice on file formats or other hints on how to get the best out of the workflow and QImage?

Have been using Epson Stylus R3000 (and couple of other printers) and now appears that Epson is discontinuing the 157 ink cartridges for the 3000.  I really don't want to start with 3rd party ink so am considering several different replacement options, one of them is the Epson p700.  I notice that the Epson support site does not have any paper profiles for the p700 - even for the common Epson papers.  Just curious, if any of you have a p700, how do you get the profiles?

Oh, you are talking about the page editor.  That should load almost instantly.  If it doesn't, you have the "View" set to "All Images", "Soft Proof", etc.  Click on the Layout tab and set "View" to "Thumbs/Small Images" (see attached) because you don't need full resolution for the layout.

Mike
