My dad is a ham, but hasn't been on the air for a long time. Sadly, most of the people he used to talk to have passed on. He's extremely good with the computer, unlike many his age.

Since the coming of email, Ham radio became obsolete.
I used to make appointments with Hams in Europe and Israel saying, "I'll call you on such and such a frequency on 20 meters at 11:00 am GMT" Then you hope no one was already talking there, or that 20 meter band decided to be dead at a certain distance. No regrets. Learned a lot and met so many great people. I remember driving to Watertown, NY to deliver a pizza to a ham shut in....
