v2014.226    May 28, 2014

Priority: Low

v2014.226 offers a new "Ultra NR" noise filter, much faster USM/DFS sharpening, and some minor bug fixes.

Ok, guys and gals...
This is another huge improvement in what we really had to look elsewhere to handle.
SEVERE NOISE in an image.
Mike has tossed out the old D1ISO Noise reduction filter system and replaced it with ULTRA NOISE REDUCTION.!
There's no set of steps for me to explain, or procedures to get familiar with.
You just have to find your noisiest images and "think" power levels: 1,2,3,4, &5
Shadow is #1
Medium is #2
ULTRA LOW #3
ULTRA MED #4
ULTRA HIGH #5

Besides the fact that it really works, it has the ability to do the Noise Reduction job, with a barely noticeable softening of the image which is usually a heavy price to pay for the NR.
The result is that you will rarely need to add sharpening for compensation for the Noise Reduction filter anymore.

WARNING!
The ULTRA HIGH setting should be applied only to spouses that nag with so much noise, that you cannot watch the ball game in peace!!

Enjoy!

I noticed the noise alterations on a face with a lot of freckles.  Have to be careful as it can blur hair strands though if pushed too far (Highest, or #5 per Fred.).

I am very pleased that Mike has upgraded thr Noise Reduction features in the editor. The D1 iso description was out of date and many users probably thought it was not appropriate. Now we have a clear description of the various levels of NR as well as improved functionality.

The pre-set levels make it very easy to choose the best one for a particular image; my approach is to start low and work up and check various areas of the image, not just the noisy ones but those with fine detail too.

Hello all.

Just got round to test the new noise reduction.

It appears that all the boxes can be ticked, as far as I can see each one is additive.

Is this intended? and correct MO.

It is a good feature and will save me having to enlist help of 'Noiseware' on high ISO very noisy shots.

You would normally only use 1 of the settings. It is possible to use more than one in any combination but not normally recommended unless you are desperate with a really bad image.
